Parents & Patients
A NEW ALTERNATIVE
Parents are often concerned about the use of general anesthesia. This is natural and understandable. There have been many studies carried out to learn about the effects of anesthesia on children’s brains and the FDA have issued advice on this.
Currently, children need a general anesthetic when they have ear tubes (grommets) inserted. This is because the surgeon needs to use several surgical instruments and a separate ear tube (grommet) and so the procedure can take time. The procedure takes place in an operating room which can be traumatic for the child and for parents.
But Solo TTD removes the need to put your child through the ordeal of a general anesthetic or for the procedure to take place in an intimidating operating room crowded with surgeon, anesthetist and nurses.
WHAT IS SOLO TTD?
It is a small handheld device, with the ear tube pre-loaded at the tip. The ear surgeon has everything they need for ear tube surgery, in this one device. The ear surgeon uses the device to quickly and safely place the tube into the child's ear in seconds, with just one click of the button. Using Solo TTD is faster and far more relaxing for both child and parent.
Depending on what is best for your child, with Solo TTD your child may only need a local anesthetic to numb the ear or some light sedation. Crucially although sedated he/she will be calm but not asleep. Sedation is often used in other parts of the hospital in children such as X-ray / MRI and Emergency Departments for placing stitches or resetting broken bones.
This avoids the well-known risks involved with using a general anesthetic on a young child. The procedure itself takes place in a procedure room or in the surgeon's office/clinic with just the surgeon present.
Solo TTD is a new product. ENT surgeons around the world helped to develop it and it is now available in Europe.
